Virginia Ctenucha Moth (2) (Free Shipping in Canada)
Take two - Its not very often that I get the opportunity for a redo when it comes to my insect photos. But this moth was a real champ. I first found it sitting on a cow parsnip leaf and took a bunch of shots. After returning home, I popped the memory card into my computer and took a closer look. The photos just didn’t cut it. After deleting the bunch, I decided to take a chance and see if the moth was still hanging around. And hallelujah, I found it it where I had left it, but turned by 180 degrees. Made all the difference!
The Virginia Ctenucha Moth used to be only found in Eastern North America, but in recent years it can be found all across Canada, including (apparently) central Alberta. The moth caterpillar feeds primarily o plands and grasses. Cool fact: they incorporate the toxic compounds present in plants into their bodies so that the taste bad to potential predators. The adult moth can often be found in milkweeds, thistles, and goldenrod.
